A case of dysphagia

چکیده
Esophageal strictures commonly complicate radiation therapy for neck and thoracic malignancies. We here report a case of radiation induced stricture esophagus and illustrate the classical barium esophagogram in this condition. 58 year old male with past history of carcinoma esophagus treated with radiotherapy had presented with recurrence of dysphagia. Dysphagia was insidious in onset and was predominantly for solids than liquids. Physical examination was normal except for gross emaciation. Hemogram and routine biochemical panel were within normal limits. Barium swallow revealed significant mid-esophageal luminal narrowing with significant contrast pooling above. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed luminal narrowing at 25cms from the incisors; it was not possible to negotiate through the stricture. At endoscopy mucosa appeared normal except for minimal erythema. Mucosal biopsies revealed only normal stratified squamous epithelium and no evidence of neoplasm. Contrast computed tomography revealed no evidence of tumor recurrence or metastasis or lymphadenopathy. Patient was managed with serial dilatation with Savary Guillard dilators. Patient improved with treatment and is currently able to take oral feeds. Stricture is commonly reported to develop in 2-3 weeks to 4-8 months after radiation exposure, though late presentations also can occur. In patients presenting with dysphagia following radiotherapy for carcinoma esophagus it is always important to rule out residual or recurrent neoplasm with endoscopy and imaging. Esophageal dilatation with or without stenting is the current treatment of choice. Figure 1: Barium esophagogram showing mid-esophageal stricture

Huge Parathyroid Adenoma with Dysphagia Presentation; A Case Report from Southern Iran
AbstractParathyroid adenoma is a benign tumor of the parathyroid glands. The cause of most parathyroid adenomas is unknown. Parathyroid adenoma increases the secretion of parathyroid hormone and results in primary hyperparathyroidism. High amounts of parathyroid hormone in the blood cause the imbalance of calcium, which leads to various complications such as kidney stones, depression, lethargy,...
متن کاملDyspnea in Patient with Arteria Lusoria: A Case Report
Introduction: Arteria lusoria is an aberrant right subclavian artery. In symptomatic cases, patients report dysphagia and only in few cases dyspnea, due to external compression of the trachea and esophagus. Symptoms occur in advanced age and diagnosis is made with chest HRCT, when other causes of dysphagia have been excluded. Case Report: An 83-year-old woman presented with dyspnea and m...
متن کاملDiffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis Involving Cervical and Lumbar Spine Presenting with Dysphagia: A Case Report
Introduction: Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH) is a very rare cause of dysphagia when it occurs in the cervical spine. It can also affect the lumbar region where it causes deformity. Case Report: In this article, a rare case of Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis involving both the cervical and lumbar spine, presenting with dysphagia and spinal stiffness leading to a stoopin...
متن کاملDysphagia Due to Anterior Cervical Spine Osteophyte: A Case Report
Introduction: Degenerative changes of the cervical spine are more common in elderly, but anterior cervical osteophytes that cause problems in swallowing are rare. The most common cause of this problem is DISH disease (diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis). Trauma is also suggested as a potential cause in osteophyte formation. Case Report: We report a rare case of anterior cervical osteop...
متن کاملA Case Report of Progressive Dysphagia and Pigmented Oral and Skin Lesions: Esophageal Lichen Planus
Lichen planus (LP) is a relatively uncommon, chronic inflammatory disease with idiopathic pathogenesis that usually involves skin, nails, and mucous membranes. Esophageal involvement in LP is rarely seen, despite the classification of the esophagus as a mucous membrane. Esophageal lichen planus is common in middle aged women, with symptoms such as dysphagia and odynophagia. This paper presents ...

Background: Mucositis [bucal Mucous inflamation] is the most common complication resulting from the radiotherapy in tumors of head and neck. These malignancies are often curable through radiotherapy. This complication, however, may impair the treatment process and cause malnutrition. So far no medicine has been Known to prevent this complication. Vitamin E is a stabilizer of cell membrane and i...
